so yeah well i went to see dr. t today.

we were all like totally mad at him and i went so atene didn't go in and go off and start yelling at him and cursing and all ...

so yeah i went.

i told dr. t about how we're disappointed that he didn't explore the stories/stuff that the monicas wrote 'cuz they really did write it themselves and it really was insightful. and we were mad 'cuz he asked "what did crystal have to say about them?" that's where atene went off. so i told dr. t that we really didn't "care what crystal thought 'cuz she's not our therapist, you are!" i told him.

so yeah well then we did just some talk about the nine years we spent with kathleen and what it is we need to work on now and the monicas and yeah well like stuff like that.

so yeah well i so think that it was a good session.

wordl apology

Wordle: Prayer

Not Worthy

I am soooo tired of always being wrong.
I am soooo tired of hearing about all the ways we are failing.
I am soooo tired of not measuring up.

I am soooo tired of hearing about how ashamed Jesus would be of us.

Alright, I get it - we aren't an outward thinking church. Quit condemning and start doing!

Yeah, we may be the church known for our tomb and our rummage sale but HEY! at least we ARE KNOWN!!!

Why not, instead of talking around and behind ..., why don't you, instead of griping and complaining ...

YOU go to The Lamb House because "somebody has to do the work of the church".
YOU go to The Breakthrough Center because "somebody has to want to help others".
YOU! YOU!! YOU!!!

How about EMPOWERING US!?! How about LEADING US!?! How about INVITING US!?!

If you would have invited me, I would have gone to The Lamb House with you. I'm curious enough to see what is so appealing. If you would have led, I would have followed. If you empower me with the tools, I can accomplish great things.

The church is just a building ... that's it, nothing more. The PEOPLE are the "little Christians". The PEOPLE are the hands and feet of Christ. The church is just a place to worship God, just a place to share common beliefs and affirmations. The church is just a place to refuel, recharge, and re-learn.

STOP criticizing IT!!
STOP making me feel like $%#@ for being a member of the church.
STOP! STOP!! STOP!!!

"You seem rather sullen today."
"Nope, I'm not."
"You're not?"
"No, I'm Not!"
At least I wasn't until you walked over and began complaining about the rummage sale about charging for the items, about using the money inward; the place that Jesus would walk into and upturn tables, the activity that "maybe Jesus SHOULD come to and over turn every single table".

Go away.

Just GO AWAY!!!

Breakthrough Center

I wanted to go check out the Breakthrough Center today. I wanted to go in and see why Pastor John is so enthralled with the place. I wanted to go see for myself.

I wanted to.

I got into my car, programmed the address in to my nav system and let it guide me to the front door of the center. There were many cars there, three people outside, but plenty of parking. I drove on past.

I wanted to stop, park, go inside. I wanted to talk to those that are managing the organization. I really wanted to query them - find out how long they have been in the community, if they knew more of H.E.L.P. beyond the building they currently occupied. I WANTED to see if they realized that the services they offer are almost exactly the same services that H.E.L.P offers or if not to understand the differences as they see them. I wanted to like the place, I really did.

I wanted to.

But I drove around the block again and did not stop.

There are only three possible outcomes here:
1) the two organizations will work together mutually to the benefit of the community
2) the two organizations will vie for resources, draining precious support from the community and both will fail
3) one organization will triumph and the other will self-sacrifice for the good of the community

H.E.L.P. is a faith-based organization supported by member congregations, schools, businesses, civic clubs and organizations in conjunction with the area cities.  Together it has made great strides in providing emergency shelter, transitional housing, a winter shelter program, food, financial assistance to those in need, life skill training and job placement for the homeless, and free healthcare to those without medical coverage.

The Breakthrough Center exists to unite local fellowships and congregations desiring to reach out together to the community. It is an expression of the love of God in practical, helpful, and supportive ways. All of their services are offered free of charge to the general public. They currently offer a clothing center, an emergency food pantry, basic computer classes, Grieving Together sessions, and a support/prayer ministry.

I'm pretty sure that H.E.L.P. began with such a simple vision when it was founded in 1982. Over the years it has become so much more. What will be The Breakthrough Center be like in 28 years? It has lofty dreams, a big BIG vision that include the acquisition of abandoned city elementary schools for shelter for the homeless. How it will obtain the support for such a dream? Will it even survive that long?

I wanted to walk in through those doors and yes judge the place. Maybe that is why my fear overwhelmed me and I never found the courage to stop, park and walk through those doors. I drove around the block yet again.

I wanted to see why our True North minister, Pastor John, is so infatuated with the place ... why this facility, this organization, has his blessing and H.E.L.P. is the bastard step-child.

I wanted to.

I drove home, stopped, parked my car, and went inside where I sat and pondered and wrote.

Maybe God protects his own - I cannot judge what I do not experience. Maybe it is for the best that I am otherwise occupied both on Thursday (the only other day the facility is open this week) and Saturday (the day of the big Breakthrough Center Community Day and Festival). Maybe I just need to let this all just slip from my brain and quit pondering ... for now.

This Crime - Pierce Sprague

Finished song written by my son who is playing the acoustic, electric and bass guitars as well as the keyboard. His girlfriend Caroline is background vocals with him on the tag.

Here are the lyrics:
This Crime - Pierce

I count the days as they pass, but it doesn't soothe me.
I feel contained, feel controlled by these walls.
This room is spinning, it is spinning, it is spinning around
me.
I've been in here for too long.

Sleeping in the bright of day,
sleeping all my troubles away.
Trying to go back in time,
trying to reverse this crime.

I've got a Sudanese shoe that doesn't fit me.
My arms are folded but my tongue is tied.
The world is turning, it is turning, it is turning without me.
I'm stuck in line, right behind all the others.

Sleeping in the bright of day,
sleeping all my troubles away.
Trying to go back in time,
trying to reverse this crime.

Wandering this hollow place,
wondering if it'll be our grave.
All we know is where we go.

I've been running all night, but they're gonna catch me.

wants, loves, needs

District Board of Missions Festival

Tonight was the BIG event for the District Board of Missions - the night that the grant recipients share their plans and goals for their projects. The District distributed funds of $29,200.00 for the 2010 calendar year through 18 projects. Many of them were projects that request and receive grants each year such as the Native American Mission Team (to the Blackfeet Nation for the past 6 years), the Navajo Mission Team, H.E.L.P., the Wesley Foundation of William & Mary, etc.

I was really impressed by a couple of the new projects - particularly the Leonarda's Home of Hope, Inc (Honduras). They currently have 64 orphans living in three rented rooms ($500.00 per month) of a hotel (with an active bar). The team supplies education and health care services to these children. They have bought land and have plans drawn up for an orphanage to move these kids into. They take a medical mission team over about three times a year.
Another new project is Caretakers of God's Creation which is exclusive right now to the Peninsula District but is an initiative of the Virginia Conference. Pat Watkins couldn't be there so we didn't hear much about this project except that it has been developed to aid district churches in going green and care taking of the Earth.

The District Mission Project will be a three part project which will be to service the underpopulated persons of the Peninsula District. Phase one (if you can call it phases) is to help the young people in our communities. The district plans to do this in three ways: 1) mentoring at risk youth to keep them from going down the path of destruction that could cause them to end up in jail, 2) FamilyLink - a program that will allow family members to video chat (or Skype) with their incarcerated children (those that are in prison not jail), and 3) work with Seton Homes in Virginia Beach to aid at risk children that have no resources (right now this is happening through Phoebus UMC). There is much about this project that I really like. I hope that I can get my home church involved in any of these three projects ... we aren't very good at offering programs for children and youth ourselves and while we have a TON of kids in our church we have very FEW youth and nothing really to mentor to them or to provide services to any of them (except a pre-school that is proving to be pretty successful!).

Well, that was my evening at the District Board of Missions Festival.

Art as Courage

I stole this word for word from the Art Blog at the Episcopalian Cafe'.

Art begins with the courage to make a mark—whether that mark is made with a brush, a pen, the hand, or the click of a lens. Whatever inclination or inspiration exists, it must be partnered with courage—because that first mark is the first breath of the creation of a world-view. With that first mark we are breathing a world-view in repetition, response, or even homage to that First Breath that brought us into being.

And what then, after courage? A promise to continue with this creation until it breathes its own breath, and dreams its own dream. And then, if it is after all to be art, that breath and dream must be recognized outside its own soul, outside its own creation—it must reach out to Other. The images seen above and below are of calligraphic art by Melissa Dinwiddie, who names this world-view she created “Kinetic Metaphor: Three Alphabets of the Self.”

Using marks from the Latin-based English alphabet, the Hebrew alphabet, and the imagined alphabet of her own internal language, she has brought into being a world where there is flow rather than separation, unity rather than division. This is a place you recognize as both of humans and spirits, new to you, but instantly also about you.

The intuitive use of marks and color in this three-dimensional space allow both tactile and spiritual considerations to speak to the viewer. And even though alphabetic tools are used skillfully, we don’t want to “read” here, we want only to “listen” and “feel” as we move as in a dance through the walls and pages of this world-view.

I was especially moved by the first paragraph of this article. The courage to make the first mark which is (to me) a metaphor to living life because in anything that we do in living life it takes courage to take that first step, to make that first move, to embrace that first occasion. If you are too wary to set the pencil to paper then you'll never sketch even a stick figure. If I am afraid to even attempt a new "technique" that has a proven track record then I am stuck in my life forever as I am. Something that must cause me to pause and reflect.

The one thing I didn't agree with in the above quote so brazenly stolen from the Episcopalian Cafe' - "we don't want to "read" here, we want only to "listen" and "feel". While I do admit that I love the flow and movement of this 3-D piece of art I (personally) am drawn to the writings and I long to read the alphabetic tools that are scrawled upon the surface. That, I imagine, is the difference between an artist and a writer. I am drawn to the piece instantly (thus my longing to recreate the entire blog here) but there is much more than the visual pull - the letters draw me into the world of the artist and I long to read what is written, to catch a glimpse into the mind of the creator of the piece, to understand her, to know her. I can never do that with just a visual representation - as much as I am moved by the piece in its entirety. No, to understand her I need to know what she wrote and why she wrote it. I am particularly intrigued by the use of "the imagined alphabet of her own internal language". You see, I too have my own internal language and have symbols that are used a an alphabet to that internal language. I know why my own internal language was created - I long to know the reason for hers. The writings upon the sculpture only increase my curiosity and cause me to re-examine the piece more closely ... over and over again.

I'd be curious to know the interpretations, opinions, comments of others who read this post. Is it just me who is so attracted to the piece because of the words, the letters, the alphabets?

Right in my own back yard

isn't it beautiful? i get to see this view each and every day!

Chinese Brush Painting (with markers)

I am trying my hand at Chinese Brush Painting. I love the way the strokes look and the multi-dimensional colouration within each stroke. However, the strokes are NOT easy to accomplish. I have a set of markers that have tips that are similar to a paintbrush so I have been practicing in my moleskin with markers. Here is some of the practice techniques.

The Breakthrough Center

True North is at it again - members are volunteering and supporting the newly founded Breakthrough Center. The Breakthrough Center exists to unite local fellowships and congregations desiring to reach out together to the community.  It is an expression of the love of God in practical, helpful, and supportive ways.

Open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, The Breakthrough Center offers a clothing center, an emergency food pantry, basic computer classes, Grieving Together sessions, AA meetings, and support/prayer ministry. All of this is free to the community.

Those who operate The Breakthrough Center have big dreams. A future goal is the acquisition of one of the two elementary schools that will be closing in Hampton and setting up a community center that will house the homeless population as well as provide food and clothing.

Volunteers are always welcome. To learn more please visit their website.

Prayer at Bedtime

Many of the writings of Martin Luther (1483-1546), leader of the Protestant Reformation, have been passed down through the ages, including this bedtime prayer seeking God's protection:

My Heavenly Father,
I thank You, through Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son,
that You have protected me, by Your grace.
Forgive, I pray, all my sins and the evil I have done.
Protect me, by Your grace, tonight.
I put myself in your care, body and soul and all that I have.
Let Your holy angels be with me,
so that the evil enemy will not gain power over me.
Amen.

Dis-believing Thomas

Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." John 20: 24-25, NIV
I like Thomas, a LOT. He was never one to hold back and he always spoke his mind ... a LOT like me! AND Thomas demands proof ... a lot like MANY of us. How hard is it to believe in the unseen ... well, for some. It seems that I have friends who find it easier to believe in ghosts than in a resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.  But back to Thomas. Thomas seems to be a man who doesn't believe in a thing just on the word of those around him. He is not a gullible kind of guy (so UNLIKE me!). When the others excitedly tell Thomas "guess what, Jesus was just here! We SAW Him!! We SPOKE with Him!!!", Thomas' response is almost a guffaw - a "yeah right and I saw flying monkeys this morning!" I love that about Thomas because he so - well, so everyman.
Now admittedly you tell me ANYTHING under the sun and I typically believe it but there are not many out there in the world like that. Most people are like Thomas - disbelieving until shown. Doubting until evidenced. Requiring proof to know. Thomas is often referred to as the 'doubting Thomas'. Pastor John implied in a previous blog entry (see A Word from John) of another title for Thomas and I am extremely curious to see where he will be going with his sermon message this week.
Back to the story of Thomas though. Jesus comes into the room and walks up to Thomas and gives him the opportunity to have the evidential proof that he requires. He allows Thomas to touch the places of woundedness. Now up to this point nobody has been allowed to touch the resurrected Jesus so I find this quite an honor. Thomas doubts that Christ was among the disciples earlier and Christ, instead of reprimanding the man for his disbelief, he offers himself to Thomas. Wow.
Wow! That's it isn't it? Christ offers himself to us, continually. Whether we believe or not Christ makes himself available for examination, criticism, and proof.  Wow ... (the light bulb goes on!) ...
Lord Jesus, may I always be aware of your availability to me and may all of us, each and every one of us, find our way to belief in You.

Until next time,
peace and blessings to each of you.

Late Afternoon Prayer

"The soul is always praying. It constantly seeks to fly away to its Beloved." --Rav Kook

My afternoon prayer is particularly poignant - why is this so? Because the late afternoon is particularly suitable for spiritual growth, at the end of the working day. At this time of the day, we are able to put aside our mundane worries and concerns, and concentrate on our spiritual aspirations. Then the soul is free to elevate itself and blossom. This late afternoon I will plant myself for prayer - allowing the soul to flower with new strength; branching out naturally with inner emotions.

Dear God,
Please make me
who You would have me be
That I might do
as You would have me do.
May I be a blessing on others
That I might feel
Your blessing on me.
Amen

Speechless

Well, I left my Therapist speechless today.

I completed my mandalas and he asked me to explain them as he looked at them. He was left speechless. I laughed - he wondered at what - I told him because this is the first time I remember him ever being speechless. He laughed as well.

More homework for next Thursday ... write a story to go with each mandala.

Here are the pictures of the mandalas that I drew: Mandala 1 is my favorite because it looks more like a true mandala ... it is very VERY sexual in nature; oh and it would look amazing with some colour added to it - pastels, pinks and tans with some blue and lilacs. Mandala 2 I need to rework because I'm simply NOT happy with it ... it is supposed to represent the loss of innocence into brokenness; if color is added to this one it will be the center flower and the irises of the eyes which would be Jade (for a jaded view of the world).

An Afternoon Prayer

A Prayer for the Afternoon

At noonday, I shall run and return,
Remembering the Light Realm and the Human One of Light,
I shall restore my soul to the Place, and abide in the Sacred Heart;

O Adonai Messiah, I call upon your Blessed Name,
As I behold the strength of the sun at midday,
I pray that the Spiritual Sun might blaze forth from within me,
That I might walk as the Holy Apostles walk in this world,
Going forth as a Light-bearer, Healer and Peacemaker;

O Yeshua Messiah, bless and empower me in the Way, Truth and Light,
Banishing, binding and dispelling all shades and shadows,
Driving out darkness from the people and the land –

Let your Holy Shekinah rest upon me
I pray, let your Divine Light extend through me!

O Kallah Messiah, receive me into your embrace,
Come as Divine Light with healing in your wings,
Healing all illness and dis-ease among the people,
And bearing forth the grace of Divine Illumination;
Bless and empower me to be at rest while in motion!

O Holy Spirit, I open my mind, heart and life to you,
I pray that you move with, in and through me,
And that you come to be manifest as me,
So that with Adonai I shall say, “I Am.”

Hallelu Yah!

Amen and amen.

Decisive Decisions

Before entering the office of my Therapist he presented me with a journal article about Mandalas and two circles and asked me to read the article and he'd be with me in a couple of minutes. Ah, homework ... finally. I felt a slight twinge of guilt. I've requested homework from him so frequently and now he gives me homework just when I've decided to ... well ...

Today I announced to my Therapist that I would be coming to therapy only one day week now.
"I would have told you that I think we need a break altogether except that my husband could be getting a job that will take him away from home many times for many weeks or months at a time ... " and under my breath I mentioned that it's during times of Ted being away that I believe "others" (if there are "others") tend to get active during the night and I get very little sleep.

He understood. Of course he did, he does, he ALWAYS does.

When I talked to myTed about this decision last night the conversation went something like this --
I am going to drop a day with Dr. T.
Why?
Because everything is going so well and I am so stable right now! He gave me a sideways glance.
Define stable, he said with a wry smile.
Well ... there isn't any 'switching', I don't drive for hours at a time anymore, I don't have incidents like that ... , I said pointing to the television which was currently broadcasting The United States of Tara on Showtime. I'm normal now, I said beaming.
Define normal.
I punched him in the arm.

Is he right? Am I? I don't know, but telling my Therapist that I will only be coming once a week felt right. I DO feel stable, calm, put together. I feel a peace I haven't felt in such a very long time as well as a confidence and assurance that causes my heart and soul to leap each morning.

Is this a sign of healing? Probably not. I told my Therapist that I find that if I just wake up every morning and tell myself that this is going to be great day and put a smile on my face and think good thoughts that sure enough the day turns out to be good and I am truly happy and feel good.
"Like that AA adage", he said.
I looked at him quizzically.
"Fake it 'til you make it!"
I smiled slightly. Yeah well I guess but not exactly - I mean I don't feel fake, I thought.
"I think you've been faking it for a very long time" he continued.

"So when next time we meet we'll concentrate on the matters and concerns of today, of the present life which means focusing on people in your life, particularly one." I cringed a bit. Yeah, why? "You've had a couple of safe visits" he marched on, "and one not safe visit."
"Yeah but that doesn't bother me" I smiled big.
"Oh?"
"I just don't think about it and things are great!"

So, am 'healed' enough to move to one visit a week?

Well now ... off to do complete two mandalas!

Morning Prayer

"Good morning Lord, it's great to be with You again today. I'm glad You are going to be with me today. Help me in all I do and say today, bring a smile to my lips for all I meet today, place on my tongue kind and gentle words for all I speak with today. And when the day's over bring me home safely."

Faith

Love Remains

"Lord I believe, help my unbelief".  Jeff set out to offer proof of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which I mentioned here a couple of posts earlier; I have never doubted that Christ suffered, died and resurrected. Never. And yet I lack faith - I seek proof, I ask exhaustive questions and I trifle the pointless things.

There is a quote from Angels and Demons that I believe epitomizes ... well, me. It is where Robert Langdon is speaking with the Carmerlengo.
Camerlengo Patrick McKenna: . Do you believe in God, sir?

Robert Langdon: Father, I simply believe that religion...
Camerlengo Patrick McKenna: I did not ask if you believe what man says about God. I asked if you believe in God.
Robert Langdon: I'm an academic. My mind tells me I will never understand God.
Camerlengo Patrick McKenna: And your heart?
Robert Langdon: Tells me I'm not meant to. Faith is a gift that I have yet to receive

Tonight I heard the voice of Christ while at True North and beyond that, on the drive home in a song on KLove.

Paul Colman - The One Thing
From the album Let It Go

Here I am
In a river of questions
Can I pour my heart out to a listening ear?
I see this life
It’s valley’s and mountains
And I think of all the roads that brought me here
Oh that brought me here

I’ve questioned my reasons
The life I’m living
I’ve questioned my ability t
To judge wrong from right
I’ve questioned all the things
that I’ve ever called certain
My race, my religion, my country, my mind

Chorus:
But the one thing I don’t question is You
You really love me like you say you do
Yea the one thing I don’t question is You
You really love me like you say you do
Hold me Hold me
So Hold me

Well I’ve questioned my significance
Meaning and relevance
Does the work I’m doing really matter at all?
Well I’ve questioned my friendships
Alliance, dependence
Who will still be here when I fall?

Chorus: (2x’s)

Only one thing doesn’t change
Only one thing stays the same
All I know at the end of the day is your love remains

Chorus: (2x’s)

While I am not an academic I am forever on a quest, a student of philosophy and theology.  "Lord I believe, help my unbelief" was my daily mantra.

This evening I have received the gift of faith.

Let Down

Well, now ...

Lent is history
Easter is over
the Stations are now down
and we (as a church) have moved into Easter tide.

I am a bit sorrow filled
disappointed
let down
as I reminisce the past two months.

No more Lenten Daily Gratitudes
or designing Stations
No blogging the Stations
or primary Lenten days
and I worry that I will regress.

I've learned so much
about God
and Christ
but mostly about myself
and my relationship with and within God.

May I keep you ever in my mind
in my thoughts
in my heart
and upon my lips
and you always be present in my life.

The Stations at True North

Station One - Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane (note the sword used by Peter).
This also include Station Two - Jesus is Betrayed by Judas (but the bag of coins tossed on the ground is barely visible in this photograph).

Station Two - Jesus is Betrayed by Judas Iscariot (note the bag of coins on the ground in the Garden of Gethsemane which is the place of betrayal).

Station Three - Jesus is Accused by the Sanhedrin (which is represented by the clothing behind the rather fancy chair).
This also represents Station Two - Jesus is Betrayed by Judas (represented here by the coins tossed on the chair).
And this also shows Station Four - Jesus is Denied by Peter (which is the rooster at the edge of the Garden stage piece on the left).

Station Four - Jesus is Denied by Simon Peter (as represented by the rooster where Peter denies Jesus three times before the rooster crows).

This is both Stations Five and Six (the columns represent Rome and Pilate).
Station Five - Jesus is Judged by Pilate (represented by the pitcher and bowl where Pilate washes his hands).
Station Six - Jesus is Scourged and Crowned with Thorns (the Crown of Thorns hangs on a column on the left, the whip represents the scourging and hangs on a column on the right).

Station Five close-up

Station Six close-up.

Station Six close-up

Station Seven - Jesus Bears (Accepts) His Cross (however, this is a bad shot because it is taken with my cell phone).

Station Eight - Simon the Cyrenian is Made to Carry the Cross (represented by the clothing at the center of the cross).
This is the same cross used for Station Seven - Jesus Bears His Cross (but a much better image).

This is Stations Ten, Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen.
Station Ten - Jesus is Crucified (the large cross has nails at the arms and feet though not really visible in this picture).
Station Eleven - Jesus Promises the Thief on the Cross the Kingdom of  Heaven (which is the picture on the left cross).
Station Twelve - Jesus Talks to His Mother and the Disciple John (the clothing at the base of the cross and the sandals).
Station Thirteen - Jesus Dies on the Cross (the purple cloth on the cross).

Station Eleven close-up

Station Twelve close-up.

Station Fourteen - Jesus is Laid in the Tomb (the stone with the crossed spears).
